The Unsettled Settler Settles
By Monica Day
I am on hallowed ground that is not mine but that I inhabit share tend— and lately she feels familiar in a new way Maybe because the fawn sleeps in the fern bed every night maybe because we rescued the baby bird from the fenced garden while mama bird screeched overhead Maybe because we mourn the ones who pass greet the ones who visit know what they eat how they graze when they give birth Maybe because we say good morning Maybe because this new we-are-in-this-together-ness we-are-home-ness we-are-here-ness this-is-now-ness this-is-settled-ness finds me no longer precarious unmoored tentative Finds me here firmly lodged between the twin maples— my sentries pinning me to this blink of time and place and finally I accept without reservation
